I think most girls can agree with me that we enjoy good romantic comedies. They are like a good pair of shoes or a good chic lit book come to life. We can’t have enough of them. The one thing for me personally I can get enough of is, bad romantic comedies. When I saw “The Backup Plan” trailer, I personally didn’t think it looked good. I knew I wouldn’t be paying ten dollars to see it. Sorry J.Lo, your days of “Maid in Manhattan” are over. Sure there are people out there who will, but not that many for a huge box office hit.
Another one coming out “Letters to Juliet”. It looks good. Good, but predictable as the trailer lays it out for you. Bad trailer maker… we like to pretend that we are surprised.
The same could be said for “Valentine’s Day”. It was expected to do so well with all those big names including Taylor Swift, Eric Dane, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, etc… It did okay. Not great as the production companies had hopped. “Ghost of Girlfriend Past” was also cute, but you know I waited until it came out on DVD to rent…not buy.
The last good one I can think of is “The Proposal”. Am I right?
The question is when will a good one come out and not be so predictable? What hasn’t been done already? That’s tough too because sometimes I think we like predictable. We know what’s going to happen. We know she ‘s going to end up with guy in the end 95% of the time.
The other question is who will be the next Romantic Comedy Queen? For awhile it was Meg Ryan in the 90’s with “You’ve Got Mail”, “Sleepless in Seattle, and “When Harry Met Sally”. I found this interesting blog that did a field guide for who could be next. Field Guide to who would be the next Romcom queen
Pretty much here’s how they break it down for the first four. The list goes on for awhile. I’m just gonna discuss the first four:
1. Katherine Heigl
Heigl did “27 dresses” which I loved which I think thanks are in order to leading man, James Marsden. She also did “Knocked Up” and “The Ugly Truth”. Now that “Grey’s Anatomy” is done for her, I guess she has more time to read more Romcom scripts.
2. Amy Adams
She was in “Enchanted” which everyone and their kids love. She also did “Leap Year” which went through the box office virtually unnoticed. Adams is now pregnant, so I’m not so sure she will have time to fight Heigl for those scripts.
3. Kate Hudson
Hudson has been around the Romantic Comedy loop a couple times. One of my favorites “How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days” did very well, but then she also did “Fool’s Gold” which didn’t do so well. So maybe she’s on her way out of this race, but I’m guessing she won’t leave without a fight.
4. Amanda Seyfried
“Mama Mia” was great fun, but Seyfried also had the great Meryl Streep to support her. Let’s see how well she does in “Letters to Juliet”.
The list goes on with pros and cons. Personally I kinda want it to be Isla Fisher because I was just watching “Confessions of a Shopaholic” today. Though that movie didn’t to well in the theater…maybe there is still hope for her. Maybe not though since she is pregnant for a second time. What? Yep, the Paparazzi pictures don’t lie, for once.
I guess congratulations are in order for Olive, Isla and Sacha Baron Cohen! Next time, I’ll discuss my favorite top ten romantic comedies sometime soon.
So what are your favorite romantic comedies and who do you think will be the next romantic comedy queen?
